Roininen was a three-time Finnish champion, flyweight (up to 51 kg) in 1958, bantamweight (up to 54 kg) in 1959, and featherweight (up to 57 kg) in 1961.

Roininen participated in two Estonian SSR-Finland friendly matches, winning in 1958 and losing his match in 1960.

Roininen competed in the 13th European Championships in Lucerne in 1959 in the bantamweight category (up to 54 kg), but lost his match in the second round to the later 1960 Rome Olympic silver medalist Primo Zamparini (Italy) and was eliminated from further medal contention.
