"Heavyweight contender Jerry Quarry, fighting in flurries, scored over Scrap Iron Johnson Thursday night in their 10 round bout at Olympic Auditorium. Quarry easily parried Johnson's rushing attacks as he counter-punched effectively and at all times was in command of his opponent. There were no knockdowns in the bout but Johnson butted Quarry in the 8th round and opened a cut on his left eyelid that bled but not enough to bother the winner." -United Press International
- It was stated that Quarry took the bout because of the $10,000 guarantee and as a tuneup for a possible rematch with George Chuvalo.
