  • Carrasco was knocked down four times while the fight. Refree was judged to be a foul the attack of Ramos, and victory of Carrasco in the 12th round.

"Spanish boxing fans reacted in stunned disbelief Friday night as a Nigerian referee saved Spain's Pedro Carrasco from an almost certain knockout by disqualifying Mando Ramos of Los Angeles for hitting below the belt in their WBC world lightweight title bout. Carrasco himself was too dazed from the punishment handed out by Ramos in 11 rounds to fully realize that he had been proclaimed world champion. Ramos took control of the fight from the start. He had Carrasco on the floor in the 1st round, in the 8th round and twice for counts of eight in the 10th. Carrasco looked groggy and wobbly-legged throughout the 11th, which he finished by slipping from a clinch to the floor. The two fighters did not trade another punch. As the fighters came out of their corners for the 12th of the scheduled 15 round fight in Madrid Sports Palace, referee Samuel Odubote sent them back to their corners. Ramos started dancing up and down expecting that the referee would stop the fight and award him a TKO. The smile froze as the referee briefly consulted officials and then raised Carrasco's arm." -United Press International

  • "It has been the greatest robbery in boxing's history. I had it won and knocked the Saniard down four times. He was finished. If I had won the fight the way he won it, I wouldn't feel like a champion. If he does not offer me a return fight, I'll never consider him a champ." -Mando Ramos
  • "I warned him three times. Ramos hit Carrasco in the nape and lower stomach several times." -Referee Samuel Odubote
  • "I knew it was tough to win a fight in Spain. I knew you had to flatten your opponent to win - but you don't even get a chance to hit him." -Jackie McCoy, Ramos' manager
  • "Ramos is a very good puncher but he acted incorrectly in the 4th and 8th rounds." -Pedro Carrasco
  • "Carrasco was knocked out twice and the referee should have stopped the fight. Carrasco holds a crown with very little glory." -Valentin Martin, Spanish reporter
  • "A shameless injustice. The referee did not count when he should have taken Carrasco to his corner and prevent him from receiving such unnecessary and cruel punishment." -Manuel Olias, Spanish reporter
  • "We feel shameful it was not Carrasco but an unfair referee who defeated Mando Ramos. But above such an injustice the overwhelming superiority of Ramos over Pedro Carrasco was clear and evident to everybody." -Fernando Vadillo, Spanish reporter
