"Irishman Barry McGuigan retained his WBA featherweight title Saturday, stopping challenger Danilo Cabrera of the Dominican Republic at 1:40 of the 14th round. In a chaotic end to an explosive fight, referee Eddie Eckert of Miami ruled the challenger was unable to continue as he scrambled to retrieve his mouthpiece from the canvas. Seconds earlier, Cabrera was floored by the champion, taking a count of eight. When Cabrera got to his feet, he was bent double by another pounding from McGuigan and Eckert decided he could no longer defend himself. The 6,300 capacity arena erupted at the end of the 8th round of the scheduled 15 round contest, believing the champion had won. The referee appeared to have stopped the fight with Cabrera trapped in a neutral corner and in a daze after taking fierce punishment. But the bell had already sounded. During exchanges in round nine, a rejuvenated Cabrera opened a cut under McGuigan's left eye. The champion, who was well ahead on points and realizing he was in danger, went all out for victory and launched his final all-out attack in the 14th round." -Associated Press
