			"Emile Griffith, a 22 year old with a heart of steel, knocked out Benny (Kid) Paret at 1:11 of the 13th round tonight to win the world welterweight championship before a national television audience. Griffith had been taking a beating from the game Paret, of Santa Clara, Cuba, before he ended it all with a savage two-fisted attack to the head as an estimated 5,000 fans roared with surprise. The two fighters came out for the 13th round working furiously to the body. Referee Jimmy Peerless separated them near Paret's corner and then Griffith threw a long left hook that caught the champion flush on the jaw. The champion reeled back, badly hurt and Griffith roared in with a solid right hand that spun Paret around. Another left hook dropped him near Griffith's corner where he lay at full length while Peerless tolled the count of 10." -United Press International
