He read a newspaper article about the lack of amateur heavyweight boxers in California, so he headed there to become a boxer and earn some money, after fabricating an impressive amateur record. From San Francisco he went to Hawaii. Then to Paris to fight [[Sam McVea]]. Then on to London.
