			Billy began boxing towards the end of 1910. Barney Murray became his trainer and Harry Hanley was his promoter. Billy Maguire featured regularly on the boxing program at �The Star� in Belfast between 1910 and 1914 and again between 1919 and 1922. At the start of 1914 he was signed-up by American boxing promoter Charlie Galvin and fought in Paris.

			In October 1914 he enlisted in the British army (Royal Irish Rifles) and for the duration of his military service his professional boxing career was on hold. Whilst in the army he boxed demonstration bouts and, in 1919, he represented the 10th Division in the Egyptian Expeditionary Force Championships but was not selected for the British Team bound for the 1919 Inter-Allied Games held in Paris.

			Billy was discharged from the British Army in June of 1919 and returned to boxing in Belfast. He boxed in Belfast until his departure for Australia in early 1922. His last fight was against his close friend Pat McAllister on February 23, 1922. Billy�s younger brother, Charlie Maguire, also became a boxer and fought in Liverpool, UK between 1922 and 1927.

			Billy settled permanently in Sydney Australia and never returned to boxing.
