He lost to Barney Ross twice in world junior welterweight title fights: first on March 27, 1934, at the Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles, California (L-PTS-10), and again on December 10, 1934, at Public Hall in Cleveland, Ohio (L-PTS-12). Additionally, on March 4, 1939, he lost to Henry Armstrong in a world welterweight title fight at Tropical Stadium in Havana, Cuba (L-TKO-4).
