	Washington, an African-American boxer died of injuries sustained in an October 24, 1945 bout in Oakland, CA, with Silent Escobar. The bout ended when Escobar, a deaf mute, landed a right hand, followed by a left hook that dropped Washington. Washington's head hit the canvas hard, and he was counted out. After ten minutes, with Washington still laying on the canvas, an ambulance was called. Washington was then taken from the ring on a stretcher, and on to the local hospital. There he was diagnosed with a fractured skull. Though he appeared to show recovery intially, the injuries he sustained would take his life shortly thereafter.
