			Curry was a four-time Fort Worth [[Golden Gloves]] Champion, a two-time Star-Telegram Texas State Golden Gloves Champion, and the 1976 Western [[Olympics\|Olympic]] Trials Light Welterweight Champion. He lost to [[Sugar Ray Leonard]] in the light welterweight final at the 1976 U.S. Olympic Trials. Curry reportedly had an amateur record of 315-11.

			Curry won the [[WBC]] Super Lightweight Championship with a twelve-round unanimous decision against [[Leroy Haley]] on May 18, 1983. In his third defense, he lost the title to [[Billy Costello]] by a tenth-round TKO on January 29, 1984.

			On February 2, 1984, Curry was arrested on charges he fired several shots at his trainer, [[Jesse Reid]], following an altercation at the Golden Gloves Gym in Las Vegas. He reportedly fought with Reid after blaming the trainer for his loss to Costello. Curry was booked for assault with a deadly weapon and carrying a concealed weapon.

			Curry was found not guilty by reason of insanity and sent to a state mental hospital in near Reno. He was released in March 1985.
