			After the first fight with Valdes there was much speculation on Monzon's next title defense. In early January of '77 it was announced he agreed to defend in South Africa against Elijah 'Tap-Tap' Makathini for a purse of $200,000 in February or June. However, later that month Monzon broke a toe playing soccer with friends and during his convalescence he stated he was planning to defend against Bennie Briscoe in Paris in May. Finally, in mid-February it was announced that he would be rematching Rodrigo Valdes in Monte Carlo in June or July and the bout was signed on April 21st.

	Monzon retired after the Valdez rematch. He was the Middleweight Champion of the World for almost seven years and defend the title fourteen times against eleven contenders.
