"Teo Cruz stunned Carlos Ortiz with a 1st round knockdown Saturday night and then went on to score a split 15 round decision to capture the lightweight championship and become the first champion from the Dominican Republic. Cruz held the initiative for the first four rounds after sending Ortiz to the canvas in the opening round. In the 4th round, Ortiz changed his strategy by keeping Cruz at bay with jab-and-run tactics. He kept up this strategy until the 10th round when he apparently tired and Cruz, once more, pressed the fight from close range. Ortiz opened a damaging cut over Cruz' left eye in the 4th round. The cut bothered the Dominican the rest of the fight, but not enough to stop him from taking Ortiz' crown." -United Press International<br />
