Although Ortiz was cut over the right eye in the 2nd and the gash was opened again in the 7th and 8th, he maintained a steady pace. The champ scored with his stinging left jab and landed a series of smashing right uppercuts in the 5th but was unable to stagger the Filipino. Elorde began to slow down in the 9th but rallied in the 13th. Ortiz came out strong in the 14th and drove Elorde to the ropes.
