Born in Buckinghamshire, England, he represented his country at the 1968 Summer Olympic Games in Mexico City and won a gold medal in the Middleweight Division when he defeated [[Aleksei Kiselyov]] of the Soviet Union. After turning professional, Finnegan would capture both the European and British light heavyweight titles. His most memorable fight was a 14 round knockout loss to Light Heavyweight Champion [[Bob Foster]] in September 1972. Their title match was named "Fight of the Year" for 1972 by Ring Magazine.
