			Cokes had signed to defend his welterweight title in Dallas on July 24, 1967 against Gypsy Joe Harris of Philadelphia and showed up at the morning weigh-in hitting the beam at 147 even. Harris, who had beaten Cokes in a non-title bout on March 31st of that year, failed to show up at the weigh-in claiming he overslept and missed his flight from Philadelphia to Dallas. He then proceeded to explain he was overweight, regardless. However, the entire promotion was embroiled in financial controversy to begin with. Cokes' management claimed Ken Hayles, the promoter behind the promotional group The Greater Dallas Sports Association, still owed Cokes app. $20,000 from their previous title bout against Francois Pavilla. However, Hayles claimed he actually overpaid Cokes because the contract stipulated that Cokes could receive up to $35,000 or 40% of the gate. Hayles claimed the promotion took in only $23,000, and that he had paid Cokes $15,000. The card on July 24, 1967 was cancelled and in a hearing Hayles had his promotional license suspended, before Hayles elected to no longer pursue boxing promotions.
