Heavyweight boxer David Rickman left his stool hoping to win an undercard match against Earl Ladson at Jarrell's Gym Saturday night.

Instead, Rickman lost his life.

The 29-year-old from Fernandina Beach, Fla., who suffered a knockout in the fourth round Saturday, was pronounced dead Monday morning at Memorial Health University Medical Center, according to Chatham County deputy coroner Sarah Smith.

Rickman, who had been boxing professionally for only nine months, took several blows to the head before free-falling to the canvas. He never appeared to regain consciousness. He was attended to by ringside physician Dr. Steven McMurtry and paramedics before leaving the ring on a stretcher.

According to the Journal of Combative Sports, Rickman's death was the first attributed to boxing in the state of Georgia since May 28, 1903 when George Feeley died after a bout in Savannah.

Rickman's death stunned the boxing community here.

"I played that scenario back in my mind over and over during my 4 ½-hour drive back (to Atlanta)," said Tom Mishou, the executive director of the Georgia Boxing Commission. "Everything in that fight was equal. (The fighters) were equal in experience, equal in weight and amazingly equal going into the last round. It's a shame."

Rickman was making only his fourth professional appearance but had an extensive amateur career. He worked full-time as an intensive care nurse at St. Luke's Hospital in Jacksonville and made $800 for Saturday's fight, according to fight promoter Mike Jarrell.

Combined, the three ringside judges had scored the fight even entering the last round.

But Ladson, from Winston-Salem, N.C., unleashed a solid left-right to the head as Rickman slightly lowered his hands.

The punches dropped a limp Rickman back-first to the canvas, where he stayed motionless bleeding from his nose and mouth, for more than 10 minutes.

The audience of approximately 400 fans was shocked.

McMurtry and paramedics quickly worked on Rickman, applying a neckbrace and giving him oxygen.

An ambulance was already at the gym's parking lot for the emergency transport to the hospital. Rickman had passed a pre-fight physical Friday night.

"When he got off the stool, he had every intent on winning the fight," said Jarrell, who worked in Rickman's corner as a cut man. "At the end of every round, I'll always ask the fighter, 'How are you doing? How do you feel?' Usually, you can look into the guy's eyes and tell if they're not there.

"But (Rickman) was fine. I told him stay down low and he said, 'OK, I gotcha.' "

Jarrell said as the round unfolded Rickman appeared exhausted.

Ladson entered the fight with only one knockout in eight previous bouts.

As a teary-eyed Ladson stood watching medical personnel work on Rickman, he said to his cornerman, "That's it for me."

Jarrell said he went to Memorial late Saturday night, but hospital attendants would not allow him to see Rickman.

Chatham County coroner James C. Metts said an autopsy would be performed to determine the cause of death.

Jarrell, who has promoted fights locally for three years, said the incident wouldn't stop future professional fight cards in the city.

"It tragic, but we'll go on," he said.
