	~~Somewhere beneath the radar of what is hip and what swings are the cultures that collide every month at Friday night boxing at Cicero Stadium, the cigar box of an arena on South Laramie.~~
	The ring is neatly framed by block-tile windows and exposed gymnasium brick, inside a venue that holds 2,200 people. Fans sit close together on silver bleachers and ringside folding chairs. On any given night the crowd is from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Poland, Brooklyn, New York and Rush Street, not far from where former heavyweight champion Leon Spinks was a gold-tooth greeter at the old Ditka's. There are couples and singles, but keep the kids at home. This is feisty in the first class.
	The amateur fighters come from Dominic Pesoli's 8 Count Productions. Pesoli has 15 fighters under promotional contract, including fan favorite super lightweight, Rita "La Guera" Figueroa of Chicago. Cards are co-promoted by Oscar de la Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions, Bob Arum's Top Rank Inc. and others.
	Ric Addy, the beloved owner of Shake, Rattle and Read bookstore in Uptown, spins loud music between bouts. The master of ceremonies is Lupe Contreras, the dapper internationally recognized voice of Latino boxing. Addy likes to play Aerosmith's "Walk This Way" as "round card girls" in tight bikinis prance around the ring.
	Next Friday night's eight-bout card is titled "The Month of the Kings." No, Don King will not be in the house, but the main event features former junior flyweight world champion Hugo "El Incredible" Cazares of Los Mochis, Mexico (25 wins, four losses and a draw, with 19 knockouts), taking on Colombian Kermin Guardia (37-7, 21 KOs). Cazares is ranked No. 2 in the world by Ring magazine and ESPN.
	Most 8 Count shows are headlined by Latinos, and 95 percent are televised on Univision. Friday night's broadcast will be viewed in 42 U.S. markets and 70 foreign countries. A new audience follows the fighters through www.youtube.com/8countproductions. The Cicero venue's intimacy translates well on television. Pesoli's wife, Tina, found Cicero Stadium while perusing park districts near the city.

	Many of the boxers are local and they draw local fans. On last month's "December Fury" card, featherweight Greg Dziubek of Chicago lost by decision to Ronnie "Da Future" Howell from Cincinnati. Da thin-as-a-rail Da Future brought an 0-1 record into the ring. Dziubek had a handful of hearty fans from Poland sitting in the upper north end of the bleachers.
	~~"We're here to support Greg," said Stanley Scoch, a 28-year-old construction worker from Justice. "Greg and I went to high school together near Krakow, Poland. The caliber of fighting~~ here ~~is good, and a lot of people come out."~~
	8 Count was created in 1997. The name comes from the referee's mandatory minimum count after a knockdown. (The bout ends if the referee reaches 10 before the fighter is ready to continue.) Pesoli doesn't promise world championship boxing, but he does pledge world-class boxing. And some of the fighters have world championship potential. In December, undefeated light heavyweight Tavoris Cloud knocked out Jake Rodriguez, who refused to answer the bell for the third round. Cloud is ranked in the top 10 by the International Boxing Federation. Armed with a smashmouth right hand, it was Cloud's 16th knockout in 17 fights.

	Addy carts about 400 CDs to each event. "The Mexican boxers like to come out to the old-school rancheros by Vicente Fernandez," Addy said. "Black guys, white guys, Serbians, they like Kanye West's 'Stronger', Puff Daddy's 'Victory,' Gap Band's 'You Dropped the Bomb on Me.' "

Pesoli promoted the 1995 cancer charity bout at Park West where former child actor Danny Bonaduce took on WMAQ-Channel 5 sports anchor Jon Kelley. Pesoli trained Kelley for the fight.
	I've followed local amateur boxing since the 1980s when former heavyweight champion Ernie Terrell began promoting occasional bouts in Dolton. "Like anything else, it's repetition," said Pesoli, who grew up in the Little Italy neighborhood of Chicago. "People know there will be a boxing event at Cicero Stadium at least once a month. If you do three or four a year, people forget."
