Although the gutty scrapper won a split decision over 2nd ranked Don Fullmer, he suffered a couple of setbacks - a badly lacerated left eye and a protest from Fullmer's manager Angelo Curley. Fullmer opened the cut in Baird's eyebrow at the start of the 9th round and blood spurted out blinding him. Baird threw caution to the winds and leaped back into action. The judges' decision was a popular one with the audience but several reporters at ringside differed and had Fullmer winning." -Medina County Gazette<br />
