"Heavyweight contender Earnie Shavers scored the 52nd knockout of his career Saturday, overpowering California heavyweight champion Howard Smith in the 2nd round of their scheduled 10-round nationally televised fight. Shavers overpowered Smith before more than 1,500 people at the Aladdin Hotel Theater for the Performing Arts. Shavers, of Warren, Ohio, caught Smith with a hard right cross in the 1st round, then picked his shots from then on. Shavers, 209, assaulted Smith, 202, with rights and lefts, battering him into the ropes. He kept slugging mercilessly until referee Richard Green pushed Shavers away and gave Smith a standing eight-count. Smith was in immediate trouble again as Green waved Shavers in. Seconds later he took another count after being down. Shavers continued, putting Smith down again before the end of the round, but Smith was able to make it back to his corner. In the 2nd round another vicious right ripped into Smith, He fell back into the ropes then dropped face-first to the canvas with 2:18 gone in the round." -Associated Press<br />
