The challenger collapsed after a second knockdown in the 13th and lay unconscious. He was carried from the ring on a stretcher and did not regain consciousness until 30 minutes after the knockout. Perkins' victory never was in doubt from the 1st round when he staggered the Japanese challenger. The bell saved Takahashi from punishment in the 1st, 6th and 9th rounds when he had been shaken but not floored. Apparently shocked by the 1st round attack, Takahashi tried to outbox the champion but failed. Perkins floored his opponent for an eight-count early in the 13th. He went after him again with a powerful left hook and a right to the head. Takahashi went halfway through the ropes, stood up reeling, then sank again to his knees and collapsed as referee Nick Pope waved his hands to count him out at 1:35 of the round." -Associated Press<br />
