Edwin H. Fluck, 83, Area Boxing Great

Former Allentown area light-weight boxing great Edwin H. Fluck, 83, who boxed under the name of "Prince Henry," died Saturday in the Nightingale Convalescent Home, South White-hall Township.

Fluck graduated from Kutztown Normal School, now Kutztown State College, and started a career as a teacher at the Mountainville School, Allentown.

But boxing buff Tommy Nicholas induced Fluck to take up boxing, dubbing him "Young Henry," a title changed to "Prince Henry" later because of his German accent.

Also known as "The Fighting School Teacher" Fluck's first contest was a four-rounder at Keystone A.C. in May 1905 when he went up against and decisively defeated Kid Raymond of Allentown.

Over 300 Fights

In his 15 years in the ring, he engaged in more than 300 fights against such greats as Joe Shugrue, Joe Coster, Benny Kaufman, Cyclone Williams and others.

During his early days as a fighter, Prince Henry was man-aged by Charles W. Ettinger, re-tired Call-Chronicle reporter columnist.

Boxed in Army

In 1917, when World War I came along, Prince Henry en-listed in the ambulance corps and was stationed at Camp Crane in the Allentown Fair-grounds, where he became a boxing instructor.

During those years he entered the U.S. Service Championships, fought in Philadelphia, and won with a knockout of Young Wil-rus, a Marine.

Prince Henry was never knocked out and was stopped in a fight only once when a referee stopped the contest early in his career.

His influence apparently spread to his relatives. A nephew, William F. Eck of 1170 Ε. Sycamore St., Allentown, spent several years in the ring. Born in the Aineyville section of Salisbury Township, Fluck was a son of the late Milton and Lena (Wagner) Fluck.

His only immediate survivor is a sister, Mrs. Stella Fetterolf of Allentown.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Thomas J. Egan Funeral Home, 413 N. 7th St., Allentown. Calling hours will be 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.
