Layne was out on his feet at the end of 10 rounds, but that's about all that could be said for the courageous 24-year-old from Lewiston, Utah. Rex staggered to his feet after taking a nine-count from a right to the head in the final stanza. He was hanging on the ropes and only the fact that the final bell rang before Charles could get in another shot kept Rex from taking the full count. Layne was down three times during the course of the fight, was cut about both eyes and was bleeding from the nose and mouth when the end finally came." -Oakland Tribune
