One of the most sensational bouts staged in a long time was the ten-round affair between Andy Thomas, the Brooklyn kayo king, and Willie Herman, lightweight champ of Jersey. The latter lived up to his reputation and got the judges’ decision. The first round was even. Both boys slugged toe to toe for three minutes. It seemed that one or the other must go out. In the third round Thomas was out on his feet. Herman kept after him but could not flatten him. Thomas seconds worked furiously during the one minute’s rest, and he came out strong for the fourth. However, Herman was after him and put him in such bad shape that once again in the fifth round Thomas was out standing up. In the sixth round Thomas looked appealingly to his corner for the towel. His seconds refused, and Thomas hung on to Herman for the next four rounds. Throughout the contest Thomas was continually warned by Referee Johnny McAvoy for using the back hand.
