Although this bout was short in duration, it was a thriller according to the ringside report in the ''Los Angeles Examiner''. Early in the first round, Mahan knocked Callahan down with a right. A "reeling and groggy" Callahan moved around the ring to keep Mahan from landing another telling blow, gradually coming out of a fog. Just as the bell rang ending the first round, Callahan landed a "one-two" combination that rocked Mahan. The second round also proved to be packed with thrills as Callahan knocked Mahan through the ropes with a left. The referee had a bit of trouble giving the deaf Mahan a count that he would understand, but Mahan did get up at the count of nine, full of fight. Then Mahan knocked down Callahan down with another right, but the latter got up and quickly scored another knockdown with a right to the mouth. Callahan came out cautiously for the third round, waiting for a chance to land a knockout punch on the apparently beaten Mahan. It was a right high on the head that put Mahan down. Mahan didn't make any effort to rise and was counted out. It may be due to the fact that Mahan was lightly regarded that only a sparse crowd turned out to see this bout.
