According to the Nov. 20, 1911 ''Tacoma Daily News'' (Tacoma, WA, USA):
: When Al Herford had Kid Sullivan training at San Rafael, Cal., for his bout with Jimmy Britt about six years ago, an amusing little incident occurred.

: Seated in front of Billy Shannon's villa on a bench were Herford, Sullivan, Zeke Abrams, Shannon and the Kid's trainers. A little brown dog was lying nearby in the sun. The canine was sleeping lazily and every few moments twitched and moved.

: "I wonder what's the matter with that dog?" asked Sullivan.

: "He's dreaming," answered Herford. "That's what makes him twitch that way."

: "I'd like to know what he is dreaming about," returned the kid.

: "That's easy," answered the lightweight's manager. "Put a piece of wood on his ear and then when he wakes up you take the piece of wood and place it under your pillow tonight. You'll dream of the same things that dog is dreaming of now."

: "By jiminy, I'll try it," said the kid, eagerly, and he followed out the instructions of his mentor.

: Soon the dog awakened and Sullivan grabbed the stick of wood and placed it in his pocket. That night when he went to the hay he put the stick under his pillow and was soon fast asleep.

: The next morning when the kid stepped into the dining room prepared to get into his eggs and cofee, Herford asked him how he felt.

: Stretching himself in his chair he came back with this one: "Oh, I'm tired as the dickens. I was chasing rabbits all night."
