The bout evolved into a [[George Foreman]] versus [[Ron Lyle]] slugfest, all offense and no defense, and it was immediately clear one person was going to go with this style of fighting. Zapata landed a haymaker which sent Reyes down badly hurt. Reyes somehow managed to beat the count. In the slugout which followed, a straight power right send Zapata down to the canvas for 15 minutes, knocked out cold. After an extended recovery period, during which the unconscious Zapata was seen punching into the air while still out, Zapata was most fortunate to leave the ring on his own power.
