Peguilhan's first bout in the U.S. and his 6th professionally. He was a late substitute for Cherokee Indian fighter George Lamson. He complained that Friedman was butting, but fought hard, taking heavy punishment. Early in the 8th, Friedman drove his right to the Frenchman's stomach and followed with a rain of blows to the head. Peguilhan was driven to the ropes by three punches delivered solidly to the body, where he braced himself. They clinched and Friedman pushed away. Peguilhan then staggered and sank to the canvas. He arose at the count of ten, then collapsed. He died early the next day at St. Francis Hospital of a suspected fractured skull. He was 21-years-old. He had such a decisive margin that only a K.O. would have won it for Friedman. His corner had tried to tell him to "stall" for the remainder of the round, but he could not understand English. Friedman was initially charged with manslaughter, but the charge was dismissed when the cause of death was officially ruled "accidental" by Coroner Calhoun. <br>L'Echo des Sports reported that in fact Peghilan beat the bell and was the winner.
