This was an elimination bout to determine a successor to former Lightweight World Champion Benny Leonard. Hudkins claimed the title anyway.
The brand-new California Boxing Commission suspended Benjamin for using a "mysterious" preparation on one of his hands, that was injected by a physician to deaden any pain, during this bout. Former Welterweight/Middleweight Champion Tommy Ryan was set to be chief assistant to trainer Gig Rooney in the Hudkins corner. Hudkins trained for speed by sparring daily with featherweight Jackie Fields, who had just started his pro career after winning the Olympic gold medal in 1924. Benjamin was the big betting favorite, but "Hudkins fought like a real mid-western tornado. Every time Benjamin hit him Ace came back with two or three blows. Clever as he is, Benjamin couldn't guard himself against those sledge-hammer body punches that piled up points against him and took away his vitality. He hit the floor after Hudkins crashed a right to his mouth in the sixth. Hudkins hit Benjamin in the body so many times that by the time the seventh round was half-way over Joe was mortally tired and an easy prey for anything Hudkins tried. Ace won every round and was never in danger." 3 days after the bout Benjamin hired Jack Dempsey's plastic surgeon, Dr. William Balsinger, to repair his damaged face.
