<p><b>New page</b></p><div>This fight was televised by PBC on FOX as the co-featured bout, and Maestre was a sizable favorite heading into the bout. This was inexplicably made for the WBA Interim Welterweight Title during a time when the WBA often had three world titles in each weight class -- a world champion, a secondary champion, and an interim champion, in an effort to enrich their coffers with sanctioning fees.<br />

Prior to the bout, there was a bit of controversy with the way Maestre's gloves were taped, as FOX analyst Joe Goossen talked about how the gloves were "skinned". After a brief delay, the bout was allowed to begin.<br />

From the opening bell, Fox used his height and reach and controlled the bout in most observers' eyes, dropping Maestre in round 2 and more or less dominating the action throughout.<br />

At the end of the fight, not one judge managed to score the fight for Fox. David Singh had it the closest at 114-113, with John Mariano scoring it 115-112, and Gloria Martinez Rizzo inexplicably scoring it 117-110, meaning she awarded 10 rounds to Gabriel Maestre.<br />

The crowd instantly booed the result and the commentators Joe Goossen and Brian Kenny reacted in total disgust. FOX unofficial scorer Marcos Villegas scored the bout 118-109 in favor of Mykal Fox.<br />

Following the bout, boxing's Corey Erdman helped uncover judge Gloria Martinez Rizzo's public Twitter account which had various racist remarks towards black people, including referring to former First Lady Michelle Obama as a monkey, saying LeBron James should return to the stables, and that a Black Lives Matter co-founder shouldn't be jailed, but should be killed. The WBA later suspended Gloria Martinez Rizzo and the WBA made the WBA interim welterweight title vacant as a result. Martinez was later quietly brought back to judge world title fights by the WBA, with WBA president Gilberto Mendoza remarking that he doesn't believe Martinez Rizzo to be a racist despite her public social media comments pointing to the contrary. The Association of Boxing Commissions later recommended the WBA not be recognized if they continue to sanction multiple world titles per weight class, and they began removing the secondary and interim titles, though as of 2025, they've quietly begun to bring those back as well.<br />

The Minnesota Office of Combative Sports didn't overturn the result of the fight and it remains as a loss on Mykal Fox's record. Those that didn't watch the fight that look at his BoxRec would just assume he lost the fight without any controversy, unfortunately.<br />
