Later, on December 30, newspapers reported an "ugly rumor that the fights of Arthur (The Great) Shires were not all good clean fun." The papers claimed that Bailey was in fact "Mysterious Dan" Daly, and that Mike Haley and "Sullen Sam" Staley - whom Shires was scheduled to meet in the near future--were none other than "Bad Bill" Bailey/"Mysterious Dan."
