The two boxed on fairly even terms over the first four rounds, though Leftwich sustained a shoulder injury that was reported at the time as a torn ligament. Castillo took control in the 5th round, when he dropped Leftwich for an eight-count. Leftwich was down again for a nine-count in the 7th round, and was rocked over the next three rounds. Early in the 11th, Leftwich was dropped again for an eight-count, and went down for another eight-count later in the round, as he was barely on his feet as the round ended. The referee stopped the bout after the 11th round, on request from Leftwich's manager [[Travis Hatfield]].
