Prior to that the Indian, showing respect for Johnston's right, managed to keep away from Charley's more devastating starboard shots, having sampled the same in their six-round draw at Portland a few weeks previously. Through the early rounds Wolfe kept his left shoulder hunched high, circled and pulled away or slipped from Johnston's rights with considerable skill. Time after time he tried with scant success to counter with long uppercuts. Johnston was out in front on forcing the going for the first seven heats. Then in the eighth he stunned the redskin with a right high to the head. Quickly following his advantage, Johnston nailed Wolfe with another right, this time flush on the chin. Wolfe went down and took eight counts. The Indian came back with a short flurry, but Johnston again took command before the round was over." <i>Tacoma News Tribune</i>
