New page

Jan. 13.- (UP)-''Freddie Miller, rugged southpaw from Cincinnati, tonight became the new featherweight champion of the world, taking a ten-round decision from Tommy Paul from Buffalo.
A slim crowd of 7000 saw Miller win the much booed verdict. The referee and one judge voted for him. The other judge gave Paul six rounds, Miller two and called two even. The United Press score card gave five rounds to Paul, three to Miller and two even.
Paul opened fast taking the first three rounds with a looping right cross that found its mark consistently. Paul's tactics were made to order against Miller's unorthodox style. In the third round Paul jammed two rights to Miller's jaw and then sent a smashing left to the body that sent the challenger against the ropes and had him groggy. Paul here went into a huddle and refused to follow up his advantage, electing to be cautious.
Miller rallied and evened the fight taking the fourth, fifth and sixth heats, jabbing his right into Paul's face and using his longer reach to hold the champion at bay.
Paul remembered his roundhouse right in the late rounds and seemed to go to the front. In the ninth Miller fooled Paul by hanging over a hard left to the jaw, and followed it up with a right that shook the champion to his heels.
Paul came out strong for the tenth, but excepting for one heated exchange in which Paul had a slight edge both elected to play it safe. Paul finished stronger of the two and when the decision was announced awarding the championship to Miller, the crowd kept up prolonged booing.''
