The Flyweight World Title had been left vacant with the sudden death of [[Pancho Villa]] in July. This was the first title bout held in California since the state had legalized prize-fighting the previous November. LaBarba, just out of high school at this time, declared he would strenuously defend this title against all comers for one year before retiring to attend Stanford College. A year later, after winning the undisputed Flyweight World Title, he relinquished it to do just that: to attend Stanford College.
