In "a magnificent fight", Janssen "boxed brilliantly in the first four rounds" and in the 5th "war broke out". Rounds 5, 6, 7 were "savagely fought with both boxers bleeding. Round 8 saw Johnson with his face swollen and cut. Johnson came out stronger in the 9th but Janssen "was ahead on points and fighting confidently" when "a flurry of head shots culminating with a deadly hook finished the fight". (The Square Ring) Johnson was shot dead during a robbery in Detroit less than four months later (19 September 1984).
