By the third round, Patterson had cuts around each eye. In the fourth he was blinking through the blood; then Bascom drew blood from Patterson's nose with an uppercut. Bascom's punches were hard, but Patterson's, while often lighter, were more numerous. He piled up points, and finally staggered Bascom with a left to the jaw in the seventh round. Patterson won the fight by unanimous decision and after the fight went immediately to the doctor.
