"Fred Apostoli of San Francisco was the No. 1 challenger for middleweight title honors today. Whether he will get a shot at the American champion Freddie Steele or the IBU titleholder Marcel Thil, only time will tell. Apostoli proved his claims to a championship match by beating Solly Krieger, NY, by a TKO in five rounds last night. It was the second triumph he had scored over Solly in the Hippodrome ring in two months. Apostoli, using a lightning-like left, won the first two rounds, lost the 3rd and in the 4th opened a nasty cut on Solly's lower lip. Freddie walloped home a sharp left in the 5th and started the cut bleeding again. Blood actually spurted from the wound and bathed many ringsiders. Before the bell rang for the 6th a boxing commission doctor decided Krieger could not continue and Apostoli was declared the winner." -United Press
