Ritchie thought Mr. Cirimele had the potential to become a pro title holder.
But Mr. Cirimele, a San Francisco native, was forced to quit the sport when officials found what they thought was a heart murmur.
After a year's layoff, he managed to slip into the professional ranks, in 1938, competing as a lightweight even though he had trouble reaching the higher weight limit.
Mr. Cirimele's son Rick said, "Dad told me that in order to make the weight, he would stick rolls of pennies in his pocket (at weigh-ins). He did it because the money was better fighting in that higher division."
Trained by George Malley, Mr. Cirimele fought four years as a pro and became a local crowd favorite, particularly with female fans. He won 15 of 16 bouts -- 14 by knockout -- before the heart "murmur" was diagnosed again, and his license was pulled for good.
During World War II, he taught boxing to troops at St. Mary's College and at a Texas base. He later worked nearly 40 years as a supervisor for Burgermeister Beer in San Francisco.
