			DEMING - Henry Gutierrez passed away on June 24, age unknown. He left us with a short boxing legacy that was packed with dynamite — just like both of his hands.

			He came to prominence in the lightweight division in the late 1950s, about the same time he met his wife, Anita.

			"Henry borrowed my parents car so he could take Anita on their honeymoon," said Sen. John Arthur Smith (D-NM) who was a childhood friend.

			"I liked being with Henry," Smith said, "Nobody bothered me in school."

			In a competitive lightweight division, Henry fought wherever he could get someone to lace a pair of gloves.

			"He fought too much – too soon," said Smith. The two would hitch a ride to El Paso for weigh-ins and ride back home after bouts with boxing trainer and deputy Mike Tarazon.

			"I remember one fight where Henry was in trouble in the opening bell. He wound up knocking the guy out in that first round," Smith said. When he came back to the corner I asked him if that guy was tough. He said, 'I had to knock him out so I wouldn't hurt him.'"

			These are kind of tales that legends are made of. Henry was nicknamed "L'il Marciano," in tribute to the hard-hitting undisputed and undefeated heavyweight champ, Rocky Marciano.

			Knockout power in both hands," said former Deming Boxing Coach Cippy Flores. Flores boxed in the Navy and also trained amateur boxers in Deming during the 1980s. He paid tribute to Henry back in the mid-1990s by presenting him with a plaque calling him, "World Contender." Henry was actually ranked No. 7 in the world in the lightweight division.

			Chris Armendariz, winner of four New Mexico Golden Gloves titles in the 1970s remembered Henry as a friend and top-notch fighter. "I sparred with Henry when I was coming up," Armendariz recalled. "The first punch he threw me cut me. He had power in both hands. I felt it ... Boy did I feel it."

			Armendariz went on to a brief pro career, fighting out of Las Vegas, Nevada, in 1977. He also paid tribute to Henry while he was alive by giving him a rare photo that was taken in Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico, when he fought Mexican champion Lalo Salas for a title belt. Henry came up short, but the fight added to the legacy of Li'l Marciano.

			"They called me 'Tomate,' j(tomato) Henry said in a newspaper article when describing the Mexican fans. Henry was pale by comparison to most Hispanics and tended to turn red when hit.

			Richard Leyba, fought and trained in Deming. He is a well-respected teacher of the sport and remembered Henry as a student of the fight game who used his tools to the best of his ability. "Henry was put together well for a lightweight, and he could hurt you with both hands. ... A real knockout artist," Leyba said.

			At the prime of his career, Henry was cut down by an accident that cost him a leg. He continued on to raise his family and re-tell his boxing stories to anyone who cared to listen.
