A one-time newsboy in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he later received the nickname of "Hobo" because he "beat his way out here to Los Angeles." When he started fighting at Naud Junction in Los Angeles, he became known as "Hobo Dougherty" because his manager was Jack Dougherty. He probably was best-known for his friendship with Ad Wolgast. At the time the article appeared in the Times, he was an actor in the "Majestic motion picture company."
