William A. Fredericks was born in Pottstown, PA, and his family moved to the Manayunk section of Philadelphia when he was a child. He began boxing in Manayunk in 1900 and finished his career in Washington state in 1917. He lived most of his life in Pottsville, PA, having moved there in 1905. In a series of articles on his career, published in 1935 in a Pottsville newspaper, it was estimated that he had 170 bouts. He often boxed in Allentown, PA, and also appeared in rings in Philadelphia; Pittsburgh; Spokane; Camden, NJ; Brooklyn; Newark, NJ; Fall River, MA; and Bridgeport, CT. He also boxed in a number of small towns in the Pennsylvania coal region.
