Bosnic started boxing as a 135 lb amateur in 1956. He had 62 fights, winning 55, over half by kayo. During his amateur career he won multiple titles, including Golden Gloves in Michigan. In 1962 he was the runner-up in the 175 lb National AAU Tournament. In 1963 he went back to the 160 lb division and was runner-up in the Chicago Golden Gloves finals.
