In a profile of Kinnane in the &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Detroit Free Press&amp;#039;&amp;#039; (March 31, 1940, p. 54), he said that he began boxing as an amateur in 1890 and then, for almost 20 years, campaigned as a pro.  He served in the U. S. Navy during the Spanish-American War, claiming the Navy&amp;#039;s bantamweight championship in 1896.  He estimated that he participated in about 150 bouts during his career.  Later in life, he trained amateur boxers in Detroit at the Thompson Products A. A.&lt;/div&gt;</summary>
