A chorus of boos greeted the decision as many ringsiders thought that Dawson had earned a clean-cut victory over the champion. Dawson continually ducked and feinted Ike into exposed positions, then shot home counter-rights and left hooks that jarred Williams. In close Dawson constantly tied up Ike. In several rounds Williams chased Dawson around the ring but failed to get a clear shot at the elusive Freddie.
