When Jim Hegerle entered professional boxing in 1954, he was an immediate hit. Headlines read: "Hegerle's Left Or Right Packs TNT" and "Hegerle Scores Another Kayo."

He started as an amateur boxer before finishing high school and went on to have an eight-year professional boxing career that earned him recognition as one of the best St. Paul fighters of his time.

Hegerle died June 26 of cancer in his adopted home of Tucson, Ariz. He was 71.

He grew up in the West Seventh neighborhood, where he met longtime friend Nick Mancini. He spent most of his free time at the downtown YMCA, where he discovered boxing. A natural athlete, he played baseball and hockey, ran track and was a star football player at Monroe High School, where he graduated in 1954. The Green Bay Packers recruited Hegerle to play football, but he passed on the chance because "boxing was his main love," said granddaughter Heather Horrigan.

Denny Nelson met Hegerle in high school. The two shared the same trainer (Emmett Weller), were amateur boxers at the same time and remained friends through the years. He didn't follow the professional path like Hegerle but became a well-known and well-traveled boxing referee and judge.

"In my estimation," he said, "(Hegerle) was one of the best to come out of St. Paul."

In 53 fights, Hegerle had 34 wins, with 18 knockouts. He rose to the top quickly, creating a media buzz. Former Pioneer Press sports writer Mark Tierney called him "St. Paul's young middleweight with the booming fists" and "the St. Paul flash."

But none of Hegerle's fights received more attention than his ongoing rivalry with Minneapolis fighter Joe Schmolze. They fought twice in 1956, once in 1958 and once in 1959. Each bout upped the St. Paul-Minneapolis rivalry, and in the end, they were two and two. An April 13, 1962, fight against Nino Benvenuti in Rome was a huge financial gain for him but ended his career.

"He came back from there and wasn't himself after that," said son Scott Hegerle. "He went to the University of Minnesota, and they told him he had brain damage."

Scott Hegerle said his father certainly isn't the only fighter who experienced "complications from taking a beating."

"They went longer rounds, longer fights and had smaller gloves back then," Horrigan said. "(They) didn't have the rules they have now. There would be times that my grandpa would have three fights in a month. That's unheard of now."

Hegerle, a hard worker in and out of the ring, was a jack-of-all-trades.

Added Nelson, "He lived a full life."

Hegerle is survived by former wives Carole Lorenzi, of Oakdale, and Joanie Thompson, of Arizona; sister Jean Borchardt, and brother Fred Hegerle, both of Florida; sons Scott, of Oakdale, and Todd, of Arizona; daughters Julie Vietmeier, of Cottage Grove, Tammy Drevecky, of Ham Lake, Jill Hiller, of Seattle, and Joleen Owaski, of Arizona; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
