"Sharpshooting Arthur Persley of Red Cross, La., launched his bid for higher recognition in the lightweight division last night with a 12 round decision over Joe Brown of New Orleans. Both fighters weighed 135. Persley was the aggressor throughout the long grind and did most of the scoring with his left hand. He had Brown retreating during the early rounds, piling up a heavy lead through the first four rounds. Brown played it cautious in the early stages, but he opened an aggressive attack in the 5th, whipping both hands to the head and had Persley backing away. Brown went back to his counter-punching tactics in the 6th and the aggressive Persley continued to pile up points." -Associated Press
