	Miles was world champion Sullivan's second challenger on the "Grand Tour" of 1883-1884. Known as the "Gypsy," he apparently had some experience with pugilism locally and was certainly a brave fellow, for he stood only five feet, seven inches tall and weighed only 135 pounds. Despite his size disadvantage, he insisted on facing Sullivan for the five hundred dollar reward. Police found it necessary to stop the bout after only twenty seconds of action to save Miles from further punishment, yet the challenger insisted he be allowed to continue. When he rushed past the police and at Sullivan, the champion slapped him off of the stage. Miles' head became stuck between two rungs of a ladder as he fell, but he wedged himself out of the predicament and said he wanted to continue, but was restrained from doing so.
