Sylvester was originally from Portland, Oregon, and got his start in the boxing game, working with [[George Moore]]. By the early 1930s, Sylvester had moved to Pismo Beach, California, a popular locale with Filipino farm-workers, as the promoter at the local boxing club. By around 1935, Sylvester had moved to Fresno, California, where he continued to promote boxing. After leaving Fresno, Sylvester would become the matchmaker for [[Tommy Simpson]] in Oakland, California.
