"Ambitious plans for the summer that have been arranged for Jose Urtain have gone up in smoke. Urtain's loss of his European heavyweight title in a 15-round bout with Germany's Jurgen Blin, 198, put the Basque on the shelf for the time being. There was no question as to who won the fight here, in the Madrid Sports Palace. Urtain, 198, left the ring with deep cuts over both eyebrows. Urtain was wide open for Blin's right hands in the 15 rounds, although Urtain caught Blin with a wild left in the 4th that decked the German for the count of eight. The fight developed into a brawl as they both tired with far too much clinching with both to blame. In the 13th Urtain went down in a neutral corner from a right hand for a no-count and Blin finished the contest inflicting damage on Urtain in the 14th and 15th rounds." -Ring Magazine, September 1972 issue

*This loss was costly to Urtain as his manager Yamil Chade and Joe Frazier's manager Yank Durham had been meeting to arrange a title fight. There was also the possibility of a 10-rounder with Floyd Patterson that went by the wayside due to the loss.
