"Sharp-punching Len Matthews of Philadelphia Saturday scored a 3rd round knockout over Kenny Lane of Muskegon, Mich., cutting his opponent so badly that the nationally televised bout was stopped after 2:51 of the round. Matthews capitalized on Lane's tendency to cut from the 2nd round until the bout was stopped by referee Frankie Van. Lane captured the 1st round with his slick southpaw boxing style and rapid flurries of combinations to the head and body. But Matthews moved in on his opponent in the 2nd round and with a devastating series of lefts and rights to the head, first opened a cut under the left eye. He promptly opened another over the right eyebrow. The 3rd stanza was less than a minute old when the sharp-shooting Matthews reopened the cut and Lane's left eye was swollen closed. Matthews concentrated on Lane's head and eyes, and after 2:51 Lane was waved to his corner and Van ruled Matthews the winner." -United Press International

*This bout was a substitute for the third title fight between Sugar Ray Robinson and Gene Fullmer. That bout was postponed until December 3rd due to champion Fullmer pulling a tendon in his leg while training.
*MSG matchmaker Teddy Brenner promised the winner a 140 lb. title fight against champion Duilio Loi, provide Loi retained his title against Carlos Ortiz in December (Loi-Ortiz did not take place until the following May and Matthews title shot did not come to pass).
